Key Components of a Lng Truck
The battery provides electricity to start the engine and power vehicle electronics/accessories.
The ECM controls the fuel mixture, ignition timing, and emissions system; monitors the operation of the vehicle; safeguards the engine from abuse; and detects and troubleshoots problems.
The exhaust system channels the exhaust gases from the engine out through the tailpipe. A three-way catalyst is designed to reduce engine-out emissions within the exhaust system.
A nozzle from a fuel dispenser attaches to the receptacle on the vehicle to fill the tank.
Fuel injection system introduces fuel into the engine's combustion chambers for ignition.
A metal tube or flexible hose (or a combination of these) transfers fuel from the tank to the engine's fuel injection system.
Fuel tank (liquefied natural gas) stores liquefied natural gas on board the vehicle until it's needed by the engine.
Internal combustion engine (spark-ignited),i n this configuration, fuel is injected into either the intake manifold or the combustion chamber, where it is combined with air, and the air/fuel mixture is ignited by the spark from a spark plug.
The transmission transfers mechanical power from the engine and/or electric traction motor to drive the wheels.
Feasibility of Lng Truck Technology and Operational Necessities




The logic used to lobby for LNG-friendly ranging from higher targets for LNG filling stations to exempting LNG-trucks from road-tolls—is easy to follow: natural gas has a significantly lower carbon content than diesel for the same energy content, gas trucks emit fewer air pollutants than diesel, and truck and infrastructure investments can be leveraged in the transition to full decarbonization through the use of bio- or synthetic-methane. With its roughly 25% lower carbon content than diesel and its decent energy density, LNG does have some appeal as an alternative fuel for long-haul trucks.
Special LNG trailers can deliver the liquid fuel from the storage tanks to liquefied natural gas fueling stations. At the site of the fueling station the LNG has to be stored in very well insulated tanks. The insulation only, however, will not keep the temperature of LNG low enough. LNG is stored as a so-called "boiling cryogen", a very cold liquid at its boiling point which stays at the low temperature by evaporative cooling. As long as the LNG vapor is allowed to leave the storage tank, the temperature will remain constant. At the refueling site this boil off natural gas vapor can be compressed to CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and be sold to passenger cars. This fuel type is called ‘LCNG’, Liquefied Compressed Natural Gas and is preferable for passenger cars.
The use of liquefied natural gas in vehicles is a tradeoff between the duty cycle (i.e. the time in operation) of the vehicle and the evaporation rate (boil off rate). In general the annual mileage of passenger cars is too low to compensate for the boil off losses. However, the direct use of LNG can be an attractive alternative for heavy duty vehicles, which travel high miles in one go.
Although natural gas is a fossil fuel it is the cleanest burning fuel available today. It can be used in the form of liquefied compressed natural gas (LCNG) to fuel cars or liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel trucks, or as compressed natural gas. LNG is a much cleaner burning fuel than diesel. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reductions of over 75% (Dual Fuel technology) compared to the diesel vehicles being replaced.
This percentage may differ depending on the origin of the LNG and hence the energy it takes to transport the liquefied natural gas to its destination. The LNG transport ship can lose up to 6% of the natural gas due to evaporation. Furthermore it is assumed that the efficiency of a LNG truck engine is equivalent to the efficiency of a diesel truck engine. This is only the case for so called natural gas diesel dual fuel engines. The natural gas diesel dual-fuel engine combines the advantages of natural gas with the diesel engine’ s high efficiency rating, which is about 20 percent superior to that of the compressed natural gas engine. However, few truck manufacturers are building these natural gas diesel dual-fuel engine. It is estimated that the he overall greenhouse gas emission saving of LNG powered trucks compared to conventional diesel trucks is about 10%.
Lng Truck Are Favored by the Market
Liquified natural gas carries advantages such as energy security, cost economics, and emissions. It could be a viable alternative to current fuel options and the time is ripe for this segment to take a leap into the gas age.
Lng truck offers advantages across a wide spectrum of parameters. It is a well-known fact that the per tonne-km cost is a major determinant of truck and fuel choices. Lng truck's price per unit, which is currently lower than diesel, makes it a viable alternative. The purchase price of an Lng truck truck is higher by about 22 percent, however, the running cost is about 40 percent lower which makes the overall cost of ownership of an Lng truck truck vis-à-vis a comparable diesel truck lower by 32 percent.
In addition, Lng truck is quieter and cleaner with an emission factor 25 percent lower than diesel. In terms of energy density, Lng truck has a calorific value of 12,950 Kcal/Kg when compared to diesel’s 10,900 Kcal/Kg thereby, enabling a higher vehicle range with similar size of the fuel tank. While pilferage issues are common with diesel, Lng truck being cryogenic at a temperature of -162°C, it can be considered as a theft-proof fuel.
That would ensure the truck is not stationary with the Lng truck in the fuel tank for a longer period. This has a two-fold advantage as it helps reduce the fuel loss from the tank and the higher truck utilisation will also help ensure a shorter payback period.
Lng Trucks Are Safe
Is it simply the name that gives Lng truck this unwanted status? Or is it that Lng truck is a relatively new and untried fuel source? Our instinct is to be afraid, but the fact is that Lng truck is completely non-toxic. Of course all fuels present safety hazards that must be managed. However Lng truck is substantially less dangerous than gasoline, diesel and other liquid fuels.
So what is Lng truck and which characteristics may make it safer than other fuel alternatives? It is a cryogenically cooled natural gas (cryogenics refers to materials at extremely low temperatures). The gas is liquefied to reduce volume for shipping and storage. It consists of methane, but can contain up to 10 per cent ethane and propane. Methane vapors are lighter than air and dissipate quickly, leaving zero residue. They are also non-explosive in open air and completely non-toxic. If spilled in water, Lng truck does not pollute or harm aquatic life. This is in stark contrast to other highly toxic, more flammable liquid fuels.
There is widely held belief that Lng truck is prone to catching fire but how flammable is it really and in which circumstances is it liable to catch fire? It’ s highly unlikely you’ ve ever tried, but Lng truck is difficult to ignite. In fact, between 5 and 15% air-to-fuel Lng truck must be heated to 580 degrees Celsius in order to burn. And even then it will be a slow burn rather than an explosion. The main risk of human contact with Lng truck actually comes from it being so cold, in gas form it can be as cold as minus 162 Celsius. Those coming into contact with it must wear protective clothing, goggles and gloves.
There is inevitably much focus on the safety of Lng truck in transit. Tanks used to transport Lng truck on trucks are double-walled and extra thick to keep the Lng truck cold which also means that they are stronger and more robust than tanks used for other fuels and chemicals. In fact, during a collision between two trucks in a couple of years ago, the Lng truck tank remained intact despite a collision and severe fire resulting from a ripped open diesel tank and diesel catching fire.
All this is not to say that Lng truck is entirely safe in transit. Breathing in methane vapors in an enclosed space is to be avoided. Also, if Lng truck is spilled inside a contained area where the vapors cannot dissipate then there is a greater chance of ignition.
The future of Lng truck as a sustainable fuel alternative is dependent on availability and potential for production. As it can be readily produced from bio-methane, this natural gas can be classed as a renewable fuel. It is progressively taking a larger share of the global gas trade, and the enviable safety record will surely not harm this trend.
